ASIAN480-01B Special Topic: History of Taiwan (with Kelvin Chen)

All too often, Taiwan’s story is overshadowed by China, and Japan. Spanning almost 400 years, Taiwan has transformed from a secluded island into a modern democracy. This course will cover the significant cultural, social and political events that have shaped Taiwan into what it is today. It is vital to know Taiwan's story in order to have a better understanding of the regional dynamics and political developments. Furthermore, Taiwan’s history is a timely subject matter in the 21st century, as the island nation has become a major point of contention between the US and China that could potentially be the next political flash point.
